Right To Rent Scheme ‘Discriminating’ Against Ethnic Minorities

People in the UK without passports are being discriminated against as a result of the Right to Rent scheme in the private rental housing market, with new research revealing that 51 per cent of landlords admit that this scheme would make them less inclined to consider renting to foreign nationals.

Conducted by the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants (JCWI), the study also found that 42 per cent of landlords said they would be less likely to rent to a person without a British passport because of the scheme.

The Right to Rent initiative requires landlords and agents to check prospective tenants’ immigration status and refuse tenancies to irregular migrants. Failure to comply with the scheme could see people hit with a fine of up to £3,000 or a jail term of up to five years.

“Creating a so called ‘hostile environment’ that targets vulnerable men, women and children is bad enough, implementing a scheme that traps and discriminates against British citizens is absurd. Expanding the scheme to devolved nations without taking into account the discrimination it causes would be misguided and unjustifiable. It is time to stop the scheme before it does any more damage,” chief executive of the JCWI Saira Grant said.

It’s not just landlords and agents that could be affected by this. Householders who let private rented accommodation must also make right to rent checks, as well as those taking in lodgers. Anyone who lives in a property and sub-lets all or part of it, both in private and social housing, should also make sure checks are carried out.
